The button-down shirt is one item you want to have stocked in your closet. The button-down shirt can be casual or perfect for office attire. You want to choose wisely, so here are some tips to find the perfect button-down for you.
The first thing you need to look at is the collar. Avoid any collars that are stiff. Stay away from any collars that are really long or super pointy. If you don’t want a preppy look then avoid collars that have buttons on it. A collar without buttons is definitely more versatile.
A button-down shirt won’t look right if there are darts on it. Even though most women’s blouses have darts, this is one shirt that doesn’t need or want them.
The shirttail should not have a round tail. The classic long tail is usually masculine, but this is your best bet.
Choose a lighter fabric for you button-down shirt. You don’t want anything sheer. Try a lighter cotton in most cases. The cotton fabric holds the look and fits the best.
You can go with or without pockets. If you want a more casual look, go with a breast pocket. If you want a shirt you can dress up, then skip the pocket. You may also want some of each style in different colors to have some choices.
Buttons are an important feature. Don’t pick a light shirt with dark buttons, or a dark shirt with light ones. You want your buttons to match and blend in more with the shirt. Pearly buttons go great on a nice white shirt, for example. Don’t get a shirt with hidden buttons, though, since it won’t look quite right. Your cuffs should have a couple of buttons on them and those should also match.
