Hair and skin aren’t just for looking pretty. Who knew? They’re actually required for specific bodily functions as well. It’s important to keep these in good condition all year long so they can do their jobs properly. Taking good care of your hair is so important during the winter months.
Here are a few ideas to keep your hair in shape during the brutal cold weather.
- A super, long, steaming hot shower might feel amazing on a cold day, but try to stick to warm or lukewarm water. Keeping your showers to 10 minutes or less is the best for your hair. Long exposure to hot water can strip moisture from your hair, causing it to get dry and brittle. This will also help to keep away dry scalp which causes dandruff.
- When heading out into the great outdoors, be sure to dress for the weather with a hat and scarf to avoid windburn and prolonged exposure to cold air.
- Be sure to nourish from this inside out! Try your best to fill up your cart with foods full of healthy monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, olive oil, flax, sardines, and avocados. Delicious!!
- Don’t forget to load up on vitamin C-rich produce such as citrus fruit and dark leafy greens. Lots of Vitamin C can help boost the body’s production of collagen which is a protein that maintains skin and other connective tissues. Perfect for keeping your hair and skin at it’s best.
- Try to cut down on shampooing as much as possible. Everyone’s hair is different of course, so if washing once or twice a week is normal for you, consider adding some time between shampoos. And don’t forget the conditioner! Skipping the shampoo and going in for a quick rinse and conditioning treatment works great to keep hair clean and moisturized.
- The best way to prevent breakage or other damage is to avoid blow-drying and brushing hair when wet. Your hair tends to be most delicate when waterlogged. If strands are really dry, try combing hair with a few drops of olive oil and a wide-tooth comb after showering. This will help lock in the moisture your hair needs!
