Nails and Your Health
Did you know that your nails can be an indicator of your overall health? You may notice a few imperfections here and there, but pay attention to some of these things, as they can point the way to learning something about your own health. Nails are not usually the first indication of a health issue, but they can give your doctor additional information.
The one time you should not worry about wearing nail polish is when you have a doctor’s appointment. It is best to go in with just a clear coat polish, if any at all. The same goes with toenails. You want the doctor to be able to check everything without hiding anything.
If you ever have a bluish tint to your fingernails, definitely see a doctor since this can indicate low oxygen (just like blue lips can.)Yellowish, thick nails can also indicate lung diseases.
Whitish nail beds that are also pale can be a sign of anemia and a low red blood cell count. They can also point to liver issues. If the nail beds have raised edges and are thin, this can show an iron deficiency. Brittle and dry nails can sometimes indicate a thyroid issue.
Have your heart checked out if you ever see reddish nail beds. It may be nothing, but it is always better to get it checked out by your doctor. Now if you were just wearing red nail polish or have recently bruised your finger or nail, take that into consideration before running to your physician.
Nail appearance can also lead doctors to look for signs of Lupus, Arthritis or Psoriasis. You can also get skin cancer around your nails, so if you ever see dark lines underneath the nail, get that checked.
Like any part of the body, your nails can be used to check on your health, so just pay a little attention to them.
