Nail Polish Terminology
Ever get confused by all the different types of lingo you hear when talking about nail polish or while in the nail salon? Fear not, we have the lingo down and will let you know what it all means.
3-FREE, 4-FREE AND 5-FREE : These refer to the absence of certain chemicals in the nail polish. There is not a lot of proof that it matters, but some experts believe the less chemicals the better.
Crackle/Shatter: This is a topcoat that quickly dries with a crackled or shattered look to it.
Dry Brush: this technique uses a brush to wipe off most the polish, and then lightly drag it across the nail to create a distressed look.
Foil: This is a removal process used when you have glitter or gel polish on. You dip a cotton ball in remover, then place on nail with foil wrapped over it. After 5-10 minutes the polish comes off easily.
Half-Moon: Manicure where nails have a base color and then it is taped off in a half moon shape to apply a contrasting color.
Jelly: This is a finish that has a sheer application and looks “squishy” like jelly
Mani Bomb: A smaller version of a bath bomb that fizzes in water and is used to moisturize your hands (or feet!)
Pond Mani: A jelly polish is used with overlayed nail art to add depth and dimension (like a ‘pond’)
Saran Wrap Technique: Paint nails once and let dry. Add a 2nd color over that and use a scrunched up piece of plastic wrap to lightly dab the top color while still wet
Shattered glass: Nail art technique that uses small cut pieces of iridescent cellophane wrap that are laid on the nail to create the ‘glass ‘ look
Striping Tape: Thin tape used for creating sharp lines with nail art
Textured: Any polish with a gritty or textured finish
Undies: Another term for any kind of base coat
