Lowlights versus Highlights
Both lowlights and highlights are a color process done on specific hair areas. You may have a preference for one type or the other, and you are even able to do a combination of both techniques for a different type of look.
Between the two, the most popular technique is highlighting the hair. During the highlighting process specific strands of hair are chosen and colored a few shades lighter than your natural hair color. The chosen hair strands can be thin or thicker- it depends on the look you are going for. For a more natural look, go thinner, but thicker strands will make a more dramatic look. If you get coloring regularly at the salon, then it is usually recommended to do highlights every other appointment, not at the same time as a color engagement.
Not all highlights have to be blonde. You can add highlights in any color or tone, but the color chosen need to be lighter than your own color. It is best to stay within 1-3 shades lighter. Good highlights will bring depth and lightness to your hair. Highlights are usually placed by the top of your head and right around your face to look natural. You can change this up if you want. Feel free to work with your stylist for a fun, different and funky style!
If you like the look of highlights, but prefer something a little more subtle, then lowlights are something to consider. With lowlights, your hair strands are made darker than your own hair color, not lighter. Even though this may be subtle, it is an attractive look to try.
Want it all? Combine both lowlights and highlights to add different dimensions to your hair. The stylist will make sure that the lowlights are added on the underside of your hair, while the highlights are put on the top of your head. This style adds different color elements to your hair, but still looks natural. With this style, you can still have highlights done every other visit, but the lowlights will only need to be done around every third appointment.
