Hot hair tips for the cold from the award winning Christopher Noland Salon and Beauty Spa!
Ah, the heartbreak of fly-away, flat winter hair. But you don’t have to wait until spring for your hair to get its groove back. Christopher Noland stylists offer five tips to help you—and your hair—through the next several months!
Add moisture. Your hair dries out in cold weather because there’s less humidity in the air, especially indoors. This makes the hair more brittle, so it breaks easier. To restore body and keep split and broken ends to a minimum, condition your hair regularly and pay special attention to the ends, which dry out the most.
Be gentle. Use a wide-toothed comb to remove hair tangles; start at the ends and gradually and gently move toward the scalp to avoid breaking hair. Between shampoos, brush your hair just enough to redistribute some of the oil on the hair closest to the scalp, then stop. Over-brushing can easily damage already fragile strands of hair.
Keep cool. Don’t shampoo as frequently in the winter as you may in the summer (or just rinse on some days). Use a gentle shampoo, rinse with tepid water, and limit the use of heated appliances or try cooler settings. You want your hair to retain as much moisture as possible. Finally, don’t go outdoors with a wet head. Cold, wet hair breaks easily.
Cover up. Switch from a wooly hat to a silk scarf when going outdoors in cold, windy weather. A scarf covers all of the necessary parts and can even be wrapped around the neck for extra warmth. Also, silk has insulating properties, keeps hair from getting tangled in the wind, and is less likely to flatten and break hair when taken on and off.
Trim often. If your hair is particularly susceptible to split ends, treat yourself to a trim every four to eight weeks. How often depends on the length of your hair and how fast it grows. Many people claim that regular trimming also promotes hair growth, and certainly it gives you a revived look and a fresh appearance at a particularly dull time of year.
