March is the turning point! Warm months are sure to follow.
But winter weather may have damaged your hair already, causing split ends, dry scalp, and general loss of moisture. If so, Christopher Noland stylists offer these tips to help in the renewal process.
Condition and trim. It may sound self-serving, but the best thing you can do this time of year is have your hair deep conditioned and trimmed. You’ll walk away with healthier hair (minus brittle, split ends) and possibly with a new style for the new you.
Color correct. Maybe you’ve reached a point where nature could use an assist. Even highlights or lowlights can make a big difference. If you’ve been helping nature all along the way, don’t neglect your roots—and it may even be time to segue to a new shade.
Schedule touch-ups. Don’t let your hair get ahead of you. Schedule regular appointments like you would tennis dates or dinner with friends. Once on your calendar, you’ll be able to plan around those ever-so-important rejuvenating moments.
Add moisture. Routinely condition your hair at home, paying particular attention to the ends that dry out the most. Remember, we’re still a few months away from the humidity of summer.
Eat well. Green, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables are the important ones for healthy hair (including dark leafy greens, citrus juices, all berries, and avocados). And drink water to help keep your skin moist and your digestive system flushed.
Be gentle. Remove hair tangles using a wide-toothed comb, starting at the ends and gradually moving toward the scalp. Between shampoos brush gently to redistribute some of the oil on the hair closest to the scalp, then stop. Over-brushing can damage your hair.
Keep cool. Use a gentle shampoo, rinse with tepid water, and limit the use of heated appliances or try cooler settings. You want your hair to retain as much moisture as possible. While it’s cold, don’t go outdoors with a wet head. Cold, wet hair breaks easily.
Cover up. Ditch the wooly hat and switch to a silk scarf a la Audrey Hepburn. A scarf covers all of the necessary parts, looks chic, and keeps your hair from getting tangled in windy weather or when the top’s down on the convertible this the spring.
