Finding the Right Jeans

Jean shopping can seem like a chore. You can spend hours shopping and go away empty handed. Knowing and understanding your body type will help you shop more quickly and find great jeans that you will absolutely love.

If you have a shape that is more straight (sometimes called a Celery shape), your legs are long and you have square hips. The first thing you want to do is makes sure the inseams of your jeans are long enough. Don’t be afraid to try high waisted jeans, since this type will actually give you more shape. Embellishments on the hips or behind will draw attention to your hips and backside.  You can have pleats, since they will add some volume to your shape.

An apple shaped body has an upper body that is larger than the lower half, with a rounder middle section. Choose a jean that will hit you right around your belly button or a little lower. Stay away from light washes, since a dark washed jean will balance out your shape and look great. For the best shape and hold, go with a thicker denim.

If you are fuller in the thighs, hips and behind, you have pear shape. You need jeans that have some give and stretch to them. Pears sometimes have issues with jeans being too big in the waist. Once you find a great fit in the bottom, don’t rule the jeans out. Just go to a professional to get the waist taken in. Go with a fuller leg for balance, too.

There are jeans out there that will fit you even if you are petite (5’ 4” or shorter.) Petite gals will want to add some length to the body so your legs look longer. Skinny jeans can be great if you are on the slim side. Every petite woman should avoid wide legged or baggy jeans, since they will make you look shapeless. When you purchase jeans, you can go a little bit on the snug side, since most jeans will stretch out a little after wearing.
