Choosing the right lipstick is not just about finding the right color. Understanding what all the different finishes are about is also very important. What is the difference between Matte, Sheer, Satin, Gloss, Stain or Shimmer? We’ve got you covered with some definitions below.
Matte
Matte lipstick does not give your lips any shine. The colors are usually deep or opaque and looks more natural without the shine. Matte lipstick has no moisturizing properties most of the time, so this may be an issue to you. Most dark and intense colors come in a matte finish. For lip color that lasts longer, matte is the way to go since it will generally outlast other types of lip finishes.
Sheer and Satin
Sheer and Satin are interchangeable terms in lip colors. Sheer/Satin finishes make your lips feel glossy and look shiny. These finishes are usually moisturizing as well. Sheers and Satins usually look darker in the tube than on your lips, since they have a higher oil content. While luxurious, these finished do not last as long and need to be touched up frequently. If you need more coverage, stay away from Satin or Sheer lipsticks.
Shimmer
A Shimmer finish is great for a night out. The finish is opalescent and looks good with indoor light. Shimmer is great for a party or evening event. Another little bonus is that it can make your lips look fuller.
Stain
Lip stains actually look pretty natural once you apply them. Stains usually come in a matte type, so they do last a long time. If you are in a rush and want to not worry about your lipstick for hours, then you may want to try a lip stain.
Gloss
A gloss is great if you have thin or small lips, since it will enhance your lips naturally. You can wear gloss alone or just add over your regular lipstick.
