All About Facial Peels
Have you wondered what facial peels were and what the benefits are of getting one? Peels can make your facial skin look more youthful and fresh.
Products are applied to your skin and will remove the dead skin cells. The skin below is softer and looks younger.
When an esthetician applies a facial peel, only the outer layers of skin are affected. This outer skin is mostly hard and considered ‘dead’ skin already. Only medical professionals can apply peels that go any deeper into the skin’s layers.
Some common products used are:
Alpha Hydroxy Acids- usually made from natural ingredients, including lactic acid. These dissolve some of the cell components so dead skin will come off.
Beta Hydroxy Acids- while these also exfoliate dead skin, they also can get into pores and make oily blockages softer.
There are many benefits when you get a facial peel. Blood flow will be increased and new cells will come up to the skin surface at a faster rate. The newer skins appears smoother and retains moisture much better.
Sun damage will be less apparent, too. Fine lines will be harder to spot, and age spots will also lighten. Your skin’s texture will look and feel better, because your skin will be ‘clean.’
If you have any acne or blemishes, skin peels will improve the appearance and make them easier to extract if you have that done. The same applies to blackheads and pimples.
States regulate the types and strengths of peels that can be used, so check with your salon before you go. Your skin may be red at first, but your esthetician should be standing by with cool, damp cloths and some kind of neutralizer. Don’t be shy about speaking up if anything hurts!
Remember to wear sunscreen and/or wear a hat after having a peel done, since your skin may be a little sensitive at first. Peels are great to do in the winter or fall when there is less sun outside to irritate your skin.
